Design Flaw - Base Permanently Attached To Optic

Design Flaw - Base Permanently Attached To Optic
I have long thought there was a market for much better red dot sights than the $30 versions, but less expensive than the $600 units. I loved the features and design of the Holosun HS403A, but was very disappointed when I experienced it in person. My first impression was as expected, much nicer than the $30 units but not as nice as the $600 units, but overall, I liked the small and rugged design. However, I immediately discovered a design flaw when trying to install the battery and frankly, I can't believe this was not discussed in the other reviews. I removed the four Torx screws that secure the pre-installed high mount base but it is impossible to remove the mounting base from the red dot sight without exerting far more force than should be exerted on any optic. There is a rounded rectangular pocket in the top of the low mount base (see image) that I intended to install after installing the battery, and presumably the high mount base has a similar recessed pocket and there is apparently a mating feature on the body of the red dot sight. The base is essentially welded to body. I'm a stout guy with considerable hand strength and I strained until I could hear a high pitched sound inside my ears. I'm an engineer with a well stocked machine shop in my basement, so I could definitely separate these two parts, but I wouldn't want to rely on a red dot sight that had experienced the force needed to remove the mounting base. Both parts are anodized, which produces what is essentially an etched ceramic surface. I can only conclude that the interface between the base and the body was an interference fit and when the four screws were tightened, the base was permanently secured to the body, preventing me from reaching the empty battery compartment. It could have been worse. The battery could have been pre-installed, and I'd have only discovered this design flaw three years later when I needed to replace the battery. There is a customer support number on the instruction sheet, which is good, but I received this optic on Memorial Day so nobody was answering the phone at Holosun, not that it would have mattered. There's nothing they could have done at this point to fix the design flaw. I'm returning the Holosun HS403A. I'll either get another Sightron, or maybe I'll try a Vortex SPARC.

This is my 5 year update for my Holosun HS403A 2MOA red-dot sight.Nearly five years have passed now and I've used this Holosun sight dozens of times and it has withstood thousands of 5.56 and .223 rounds with zero issues. Add to that the important point that the Holosun has held it's zero and the original battery is still giving me a crisp, bright dot to aim with. Holosun will be the 1st sight I will purchase when looking for a new electronic sight. I've tried others but I love the Holosun for it's rugged reliability and ease of use. I'll simply start this review by stating the obvious, Aim-Point had the micro red-dot market in their pocket because Aim-Point made the best red-dot sights. Other red-dot manufacturers have come along such as Vortex with their Sparc and earlier models. And Bushnell has offered the TRS-125 which is an awesome little sight at a great price. But the Vortex Sparc does not even come close to the Aim-Point red-dot sights in battery life not to mention the Sparc has a on-off pressure switch which can accidentally turn the Sparc on if the pressure switch is laid against something which depresses the switch. Sounds like little issues unless one depends on a red-dot sight to help them stay alive.

The Bushnell TRS-125 has a knob with the on position facing the operator and it takes turning the knob to increase or decrease the red-dots brightness level. These are good things to me as is the battery life which is longer then the Sparc but still doesn't come close to the Aim-Point series of micro red-dot sights or the Aim-Point Comp M4. The Vortex Sparc & the Bushnell TRS-125 have relatively precise, crisp dots like an Aim-Point but both are limited in how much water pressure they can handle as opposed to the Aim-Point. And yes you might say you won't be swimming out of a nuclear submarines torpedo tube in scuba gear anytime soon but I have seen red-dot sights dropped in water over 15' in depth and when finally recovered no longer work. Not a good thing if one needs it to help make it through a hunt or other event.
Now there is the Holosun micro red-dot which touts a 50,000 hour battery life and is supposedly submersible to 100'. The Holosun also has a precise 2 MOA dot which makes for more precise shots. Add to that a limited lifetime warranty & a price tag often around $200 and you now have a clear contender to the Aim-Point's excellent but expensive series of red-dot sights. That being said I'm only giving the Holosun 4 stars because I don't prefer pressure switches on my red-dot sights and this Holosun has yet to prove it will actually run for some 5 years ( 3 to 4 years would make me a believer ) or take being submerged in water at some 50' for a few hours.

When these events have occurred and the Holosun micro red-dot proves it will do what Holosun touts then I will indeed return to give it 5 stars. But from the outset other then the two pressure switches along the top of this unit I really like this red-dot and upon having fired it mounted to a .308 WIN semi-auto AK variant plus an AR-15 in .223 it has held its zero every time through several hundred rounds of .308 and .223 and stays on in weather under 15 degrees. These are good things and gives me hope that it will have me give it 5 stars about three to four years from now.

Got my sight in the mail today. Looked nice in the box and felt sturdy. It looks to be of acceptable quality. The red dot itself is decent. Not perfect by any means but as good as I could expect for what I paid for it if not better. Unfortunately after putting in the battery I was dismayed to find that one of the 4 screws attaching the riser to the optic easily stripped out the drilled hole where it attached and will no longer tighten. It did not take very much torque to do this either. I was quite surprised. Obviously this is a problem so I am sending it back. I am hoping this is a unique issue as I have heard no other complaints about this so I will give holosun another shot and I'll try again with a new one.

EDIT: I returned the sight and they sent out a new one, but this time I requested the model with the battery on the right side behind the adjustment knobs. I like this design much better. I can change the batter out without removing the sight and losing zero. It did not come with a riser mount, so I ordered a weaver 1/3 co-witness riser mount and it's a good combination. This sight is light, has a good, clear dot, and provides a wide field of view. The only reason it doesn't get five stars is because the glass, while of good quality, could be a little more clear. This sight isn't quite perfect, but it is still far better than expected for the money. I would recommend it to anyone.

Typically when I write a review for a firearms product, I like to have used the item to the point that I feel I can give an honest review. I get a kick out of the guys who mount an accessory to a firearm, or at best make a single trip to the range, and give a full on positive/negative review of an item. I'm by no means an expert, but after using the Holosun Micro Red Dot for several months and shooting approximately 600-700 rounds through it, I think I've gotten familiar enough with the optic to give it a fair review.

The Holosun red dot is not perfect, and I'll do a quick pros/cons rundown, but to me its important to keep the features and expectations of an item on par with its pricepoint. And in the case of this item, I would argue that this optic is by far one of the best deals on the market. As noted, I've put several hundred rounds through the optic, I've removed it and placed it back on the rail for various reasons, and through it all its held 100% zero. A quick disclaimer as well, I am by no stretch of the imagination "easy" on my guns or the accessories on them. The actual red dot reticle has not once failed to turn on by the time I've grabbed and raised the rifle (which I can promise I've tested countless times), and overall I'm impressed with the dot and the diode that projects it (see more in pros/cons).

The overall body of the optic is impressive as well. It feels very substantial and well assembled, and according to the manufacturer is waterproof up to 100 ft, although I haven't tested this beyond the optic getting rained on. The two mounts are included in the box, but truthfully are nothing too special. They definitely serve their purpose but overall feel like the cheapest thing about the optic. Unfortunately on the particular optic I bought (HS403A) the screw pattern is proprietary to Holosun and the optic won't work with any other brand of Aimpoint style mount. The two buttons located on the top of the red dot are very tactile and can easily be used with gloves, although with the auto awake feature I've only used them a handful of times.

Despite a lot of people complaining about the location of the battery on the optic, I won't even mention this because frankly I not only disagree, (A} where else was it supposed to go? B} with the battery life how often will you need to change it?) I find it to be a positive. After shooting this optic for several months I recently picked up a friend's rifle with an Aimpoint Micro attached. I looked through it and realized the brightness knob on the side of an Aimpoint is very distracting when shooting with both eyes open, and seems very clunky and unnecessary after shooting the more streamlined Holosun. I'm sure I'll make some enemies with that statement but frankly, I think Holosun has an overall design improvement that is very unique and functional in the "Aimpoint clone" circle.

There's a lot to like about the Holosun HS403A red dot. Like I said it's not perfect, but it shouldn't be for its price range. And let's face it- is there such a thing as a perfect optic? The Eotech and Aimpoint owners of the world may argue so (both of which I have or currently do own), and they certainly have valid points when it comes to quality control and real world usage. But its important to remember that any electronic optic WILL FAIL, its just a matter of how frequently and under what conditions. I'm not saying I would put my life on the line with the Holosun red dot (I'm also not saying I wouldn't), but for the average range user this optic will more than serve its purpose at a price that literally can't be beat by any other manufacturer.

    PROS:
    -Price
    -Quality
-Limited lifetime warranty (according to manufacturer website)
    - Battery Life (obviously I haven't personally tested this feature but I have no reason not to think I won't get years of life out of a battery, and frankly, if Holosun weren't confident in the battery life it would be a suicidal claim to make in my opinion.)
-Sight window is very clear and the diode "mound" barely appears in the sightline
-Turret caps double as windage adjusters, not typical for budget optics in my experience

    CONS:
-Lack of mount compatibility on some models
-Mounts included are more than adequate but do have the cheapest feel of anything about the optic
-Overall dot is very crisp but I find it to be somewhat "starry" at certain times/brightness settings
-If I'm being picky, the QR bar code on the side is a little bit gimicky and unnecessary (when scanned it simply takes you to the website)
