    Nighforce scopes have a great reputation and were highly recommended by the instructors (formerly military or current SWAT snipers) on a precision rifle shooting course I took a while back, which was why I decided to try this scope to mount on a 30-06 hunting rifle. 2.5-10x is a really useful magnification range for that purpose and the rugged build would be bomb proof in the field. I normally use Swarovski riflescopes (which are in a similar price range) on my hunting rifles, so that's my basis for comparison. Frankly, the Nightforce glass is significantly inferior to the Swarovski; just nowhere near as clear or bright for a similar sized objective lens at similar magnification... The MOAR reticle is probably great if you are a sniper, but in a typical hunting scenario (most shots will be between 100 and 300 yards), it's too complex and the central "cross" is too small and hard to see quickly in the field; it's easily lost against the background or the hair colour of the game (deer/elk), so even in bright light, it's best to use illumination. To be fair, that's not a problem with the scope, just a poor choice of reticle on my part; a plex reticle would be better for my uses. The 30mm tube does allow for a wide range of adjustment, but again, not that useful in my typical hunting scenarios. The turrets are easy to use, with a nice positive "click" but I was disappointed to find that the scope doesn't track well and the turret adjustments seem to move the point of impact by almost 0.5MOA rather than the advertized 0.25MOA per click; this is reproducible. The parallax adjustment isn't smooth but the "focus" seems to jump as I adjust. Bottom line, I'm disappointed with this as a hunting scope and this will be the last Nightforce scope I buy. That said, the scope is fine for target shooting at the range.

    I have several scopes in this category from the usual top end manufacturers, including other NFs....expensive yes, but in NF case you get what you pay for. Optics have incredible clarity, and the 30mm tube is very rugged. Turrets click decisively and track incredibly well. I prefer the MOA/MOA system with the MOAR reticle as its easier to translate for drop/vs range. I held out for the new NF compact as 1) it has the side focus adjustment which makes it easy to keep the crosshairs steady as you make final adjustments and 2) the 10x power is suited to longer shots and tighter groups on paper for either .223 or .308 load testing. Illuminated reticle takes a little getting used to but I like the green or red selection depending on the color of the backdrop....if only it was tritium instead of battery powered.
