- Reviewed in the United States on January 4, 2015This versatile and dependable scope combines state-of-the-art illumination (which automatically turns on when the weapon is moved and off when it's left at rest to optimize the CR-2032 battery life) with the stunningly clear optics, a very useful magnification range (actual magnification is 1.3x to 4x), long eye relief (~ 4 inches, depending on magnification), and a solid 30mm tube. It's great in virtually any light due to the adjustable illumination controls, but especially shines in low light with the innovative FireDot reticle, features unparalleled 90 MOA of windage and elevation adjustment travel, and includes Leupold's DiamondCoat exterior for abrasion resistance and light transmission.
I absolutely love the FireDot illuminated reticle, it's one of if not the best I've ever used for short- to mid-range shooting with any AR style rifle, even when engaging rapidly moving targets in low light. The scope itself has a sleek, incredibly functional design with daylight-capable illumination. The patented 1-button design minimizes bulk, while allowing users to select between 8 intensity settings, including a low/high indicator. I've paired it with a GG&G Accucam quick-detach mount that returns to true without need for readjustment. If you want to add the Leupold Alumina flip-up covers you'll need #114756 and #59055. They're pricy, but provide unsurpassed in fit and protection for the scope.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 2, 2019Amazing scope especially for low light shorter target distances. At 1.5x perfectly usable at even few yards, almost like a red dot (still, not quite instant target acquisition in my opinion). Generous eye relief. Top build and awesome optical quality. Especially towards wide angle - have professional glass to compare against and the quality of this scope at a fraction of the price it's impressive (to me at least). Very easy to mount using standard 30mm rings and zero. Mine arrived in perfect condition, with full original packaging and papers, with a fresh and sealed battery that I had to put in myself. Also comes with a soft rubber caps pair that protects well the scope ends when not in use.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 5, 2013Good scope. Typical Leupold quality.
Clear, crisp view. Exactly what I expected.
My only regret is that I got it in silver instead of black.
I bought it to mount on a stainless steel slug gun and thought the silver would look sharp with the stainless barrel.
It did look very good. In fact, it was eye-catching.
The very nice buck I had been hunting saw it right away and heartily flagged his approval as he returned to some very thick cover.
Too bright for the deer woods!
I ended up spray-painting gun and scope in camo.
It actually looks great and scope of course still works fine.
If you are gonna hunt with it, get it in black, though.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 28, 2019I purchased the Leupold VX-R Hog to go on my .308 Savage Hog Hunter. I tried several scope options but foung the VX-R Hog to be the best. It is clear, durable, precise, repeatable, and light weight. It is money well spent. I hunt hogs at ranges of 25 to 100 yards. This scope puts you on target quickly with the Red dot/Pig Plex reticle . On 4 power. 100 yard kill shots are very achievable. I also own the 1" non lighted version. It is very good but the VX-R Hog is worth the difference.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 14, 2015Excellent scope red dot is easily seen and very clear. Very Clear field of vision, eye relief is good and a shot can be lined up fast. If the rifle has a front sight it will be ghosted at 1.25x setting and not visible after raising to 2x through 4x magnification. Shoots great in the 25-100 meter range. but is also capable of any range shot you would wish to take.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 2, 2018Great Scope! Super nice glass, and perfect scope for an AR type rifle. I had a couple issues during a training class however.
First, I could not get the fire dot to light up consistently. Would shut off at the worst times. I found out the problem was I had tightened the cap down too tight. Once I loosened the cap a bit all has worked perfectly ever since. Seems weird that there is no stop of some kind to avoid that. I did not over-tighten it in my opinion the first time, but apparently so...
Second, in walking back and forth from targets I realized I was somehow hitting the adjustment knobs with my knee while slung (I think). Easy enough to figure out one I noticed that the knob was not set at zero but I did have point of impact inconsistancy before I noticed that. Beware. You REALLY (REALLY!) need to zero the knobs or you won't know where zero is if you bump these knobs. Zeroing the knobs is easy, just make sure you do it on any scope with exposed knobs like this.
I am happy with the scope now that I know these two things, and expect this to last a lifetime like any leupold. I gave it 4 stars only mainly because of the lack of a cap stop but would be a 5 otherwise.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 24, 2019I put this Leupold VX-R 3-9x scope in a LaRue mount atop my PTR-91 .308 rifle with a Magpul PRS stock. The combination worked great. The whole package looks great and the light weight of the scope helps keep the heft down on what is already a heavy rifle. I typically run Trijicon scopes, but the glass quality in this Leupold is very impressive. If you're not looking to spend a ton but want a quality scope this is a good option for sure.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 18, 2013I've used Leupold (almost) exclusively for 20+ years but have reservation about the VX-1 line. Good cosmetics, good clarity, I'll stress test it this week with 3" sabot.
Here is the reservation...the turret dials are a cheap joke. They also have some play and catch that leaves you wondering 'was that a click up or not'; and will the setting stay in place. There are all these rumors about outsourcing to China, I have no idea what the deal is. I just find this key element a surprise from a company I thought reliable. I buy their stuff specifically to support American workers.
If it dials in and holds under stress, then it's a good value scope that will take a half dozen shots a year. I like my $180 Nikon better, though.
