Self-regulating brightness Description on the amazon page said: “Conserves battery life by automatically adjusting to available light conditions” On the Bushnell webpage it’s called “Self-regulating brightness” Sounds good? Not really, the owner's manual said – “The First Strike scope has an integrated photocell which automatically activates the unit when the protective lens cover is removed, so there is no power switch.” No power switch? IMHO it’s over engineered to begin with, and my particular unit did not work correctly. At the normal lighting conditions the red dot is too dimmed. In a walk-in closet with the door half open, the red dot becomes invisible but it is still light enough in the closet. I called Bushnell’s customer support and described to them the problem. Customer representative agreed that it is not working correctly and advised me to return or exchange it. Questionable build quality Look at the photo: Cheap knockoff on the left, Bushnell on the right. Note the windage and elevation adjustments screws on the front of the knockoff, probably it based on the previous version of the Bushnell. Bushnell has new locations for the adjustments, but they are still using the part from the old version, the holes are just patched with some compound. May be it would be ok for the $19 knockoff, but not for the brand name product. I’m returning it.

I've fired about 50 rounds with this on my Savage bot action 308. Most of that was on paper. A few outings have been hog hunting. So far it's been great. I bought this sight specifically because of the low profile. I needed something that would fit in the gun scabbard while riding horseback. Other than spending 5x the money this is about as slim as it gets. Once you get some practice, sight acquisition is very fast. On one occasion while hunting I forgot to remove the cover before shouldering the rifle. I quickly removed the cover, the red dot lit instantly and I was able to harvest the hog before he got away. I have had no issues with the auto adjusting brightness. I've had it out target shooting in very low light past sunset. It was dark enough out that we had headlights on to light the target. The dot did not shut off, but was dim enough to not interfere with the sight picture.

I got this sight several days ago and after mounting it on my Remington 870 12 Ga I had a great time switching from twighlight to bright room light to mounted flashlight and watching the dot quckly, less than a second, adapt the brightness of the dot automatically. After checking in the house I took it outside and sighted in on objects laying on bright sun glared snow. The autoadjust worked perfect in all light conditions. I just returned from the range today and after sighting it in was able to consistently fire tight groups with it. So far very happy with the sight. Will update the review at a later date if robustness becomes an issue using it with the 12 Ga.

Update: I liked the sight on my 870 so bought one for my AR. Initially it was cold so sighted it in at an indoor range (20 yards). Now that it's warm I took it to an outdoor range to sight it at 100 yards but found the dot to large a MOA to sight well for decent group. I've ordered a different reticle sight but have not had a chance to evaluate it yet. I will have to adjust brightness with the new sight but will be able to aim more precisely at longer distances, something I consider a must for a rifle.

I bought this to install on Ruger 10/22 Takedown because I did not want to put expensive optics on a cheap rimfire rifle.
I got what I paid for-average performance at an average price. Two things irked me about this product. First, the cover is the on-off switch and there is no other way to turn it on or off. Really? Second, this sight was really hard for me to zero in-I realize this is subjective, but I am no stranger to optics and have never had any trouble zeroing scopes or red dots from Trijicon, Eotech or Leupold. Maybe you'll have this problem, maybe not.

The reticle brightness is only controlled by ambient light-you can't adjust it. I found it too bright in low light and not bright enough in daylight. Again, subjective.

So, why is this sight not just a piece of junk? It's well made, functions decently as designed once zeroed, is very compact but still easy to acquire a sight picture and is generally functional-all sort of like a plain work truck with a manual shift.

Would I buy another? No. There are better options out there for the money, from Bushnell or others, or you can go more expensive.

This red dot is worth every penny, can't beat it for less than a 100 bucks. I was very pleased with the quality and size of the sight. I like the auto brightness feature ,the lack of a on/off switch is a minus but I can deal with that . The dot is nice and clear but takes some getting used to acquiring the target. I put this on my new Ruger 22/45 ,love it. Took very little time zeroing it in ,was almost there from the start .This sight makes a 64 year old half blind retired welder into a better than average marksman. I'm thinking of getting the S&W 22 Victory and will defiantly have one on that. An excellent choice if your looking for a reasonably priced red dot with better than average qualities.

Very happy with this sight. I bought it because of the 5 MOA red dot, which is perfect on my handgun and easy to pick up. It might not be precise enough for a rifle, but it's working perfectly for my application. Reasonably easy to sight in as well.

The First Strike is performing very well. However, the adjustment screw for zeroing does not "click" as one would expect or prefer. Because of this, I don't know if it will hold zero after few more practices.

This was my first red dot so I can not compare to others . I tried it on a rim fire handgun , indoors it worked to my expectations.
I tried it on a rim fire rifle outdoors . I felt the 5 min. dot was to large for the precession I was looking for. It took a little bit of back and forth and up and down to get it sighted in. the adjustments seemed a bit crude ,but once I got it on it was OK.
