I considered these for a couple of months. Finally took the plunge and glad I did. For a Generation 1, they really do work well. While not comparable to military grade night vision, they do the job. The infrared illuminator really helps. Just make sure you don't expose them to strong light. The manual, while short, supplies all the info you need, especially for focusing both the eyepiece and also the front, objective lenses. As long as you don't expect a crystal clear image that is super sharp, you will be pleased with this product. High end night vision go for real big money. For someone like me that does not have deep pockets, its a fair and reasonable price for decent night vision.

We were expecting to be able to see during the day. In fact the day vision is very blurry. When I called Bushnell they said "of course" and that you can't expect to use them for day vision. Use a cheap pair of regular binoculars for that. I purchased them because they did day and night so ended up returning them.

Can see clearly across a field but looking into the woods I can't see as far as I would be able to in the daytime. I'm very happy with the product though. I can clearly see objects in the field behind my house in the pitch black with these night vision binoculars.

Good night vision - when they work. They come with a horrible soft sided case that unfortunately doesn't comfortably store the binocular AND the strap.

Every other time I try to use these, either the battery is dead or they won't function. This is because of the poor design of the on/off push button and cheap soft sided case. When you try to get these into the soft sided case, you'll inevitably press the button, turning them on. Just leave the strap hang out of the zipper, or you'll for sure press the button if you try to fit it inside the case.

It's also extremely easy to press the button THROUGH the case. So moving them around normally, you can turn them on inside the case. I'm sure it can't be good for them to be on for long periods of time.

Even when the batteries aren't dead, or you have a backup pair of AAA batteries.... if it's been on for a while, they still won't function for 20-30 minutes or more, until they "cool off". And the night vision that you start getting around 30 minutes to an hour is very poor.

I've tested them before going to bed - in case I need to try to catch thieves or vandals at night. Later on, the dog will start barking, waking me up from a dead sleep. I go to look, hear people, but can't see. The on/off button was triggered when putting them in the soft sided case. They've NEVER functioned when I've needed them urgently. I think I've tried to use them to see what was going on outside at night three times, and all three times they were on inside the case over night. And would not function when I needed them.

Another time a buddy of mine borrowed them to take on a camping trip with his kids. Of course, they didn't function. He probably pressed the button through the case while transporting them. Then couldn't understand why they wouldn't work.

If you know of the issues, you can mitigate them. But you shouldn't have to for something that retails around $600-$700. Put a decent on/off switch on it.

Pretty useless when they won't come on!

ALSO VORSICHT BITTE.

1.0 out of 5 stars faulty night vision binoculars - and too often over-priced
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 30, 2018
Update: the 'on'/'off' button stopped working in under a year. As such, these are now non-functional. I'd return them for a refund, but that option doesn't exist - which is absurd. I used them only a few times, and stored them away carefully. Given that I'm not the only reviewer to comment on this, the item must involve a faulty design. I do not recommend these binocular.

    My original review:

These are effective night vision binoculars. They're light (at less than 500g), and are therefore easy to carry. They're also small (at barely 7" in length and 5" in width), so can be stored with ease. These binoculars come with a carry case (with strap), although this case is not waterproof. And a shoulder strap is also included.

The strength of magnification is 2.5 (so things appear two and a half times larger / closer to you). And they have an objective lens of 40mm (which determines how much light passes through). As far as binoculars go, neither of these figures is particularly impressive. I have a pair of 10x50 (which cost me about £70), and they're much better at viewing things - in daylight.

While the specifications of this item don't stand out, what makes them special is that they work in the dark. They're highly sensitive to light - and will work well in near-dark conditions. When it's completely dark, there's an 'infrared' button - which activates a built-in spotlight (invisible to the human eye). When activated, these binoculars will allow for vision up to about 100m. Everything is seen through a green hue - and other colours cannot be readily made out.

To function, these binoculars require two AAA batteries. They are simple to use - although you'll need to adjust the lenses. The photosensitivity is good, and these binoculars provide a high resolution image. As such, you'll see the night-time environment very clearly. I've used these for badger watching and viewing Barn Owls - and have been impressed with the results. The material they're designed from means that they're rain proof - which is useful.

The negatives: It would have been useful had they allowed for a tripod to be attached. I do think the eye lenses are a bit too close together - and, as they can't be adjusted (unlike most conventional binoculars), this is a nuisance. I didn't expect these binoculars to be quite so small - and, given their tiny size, there's a certain "insubstantial" quality to them. Finally, when I added them to my 'wish list' they were priced at £220. Yet the following day, when I was to buy them, they went up in price to £450! The price fluctuates - and I eventually bought them for £230. As I write, they're priced at £485 - which is far too high, and they're simply not worth that. Having looked elsewhere, you can pick these up for under £250.

So long as you don't over-pay for these binoculars, and you're aware that they're quite tiny, then you'll no doubt enjoy them. They're fit-for-purpose, and allow for great night vision. I've included a few photos (including one that shows my phone, for size comparison).
