Spitfire 3X Prism Scope (SPR-1303)
The 3x Spitfire combines an impressive array of high-performance features into a rugged, ultra-compact package. When fast target acquisition in close- to medium-range shooting applications is a priority, the Spitfire excels. Laced with advanced features, the sophisticated prism-based design allows for a more compact optical system without sacrificing optical quality. The EBR-556B reticle is etched directly on the prism to assure consistent point-of-aim at all times with selectable red/green illumination of five intensity levels to match specific conditions. Prism Scopes are not compatible with the VMX-3T Magnifier. Dual use for Shooting Tactical / Hunting.

EBR-556B (MOA) Reticle
The EBR-556B reticle (Enhanced Battle Reticle) is designed around the 5.56 x 45 cartridge to aid in rapid shooting at both near and far ranges—providing holdover and ranging references from 0-500 yards. Etched directly on the prism to assure consistent point-of-aim at all times with selectable red/green illumination of five intensity levels to match specific conditions.
Basic Operation
Illumination Control
The reticle can be used without illumination. To activate the reticle illumination, rotate the illumination dial to the left or right. The dial shows both red and green numbers, indicating five levels of brightness. Rotate the dial so the number indicating the desired color and intensity faces the shooter.
Reticle Focus
This Vortex Spitfire prism scope uses a fast focus eyepiece designed to quickly and easily provide a sharply focused reticle. To adjust the reticle focus:
1. Look through the scope at a blank white wall or up at the sky.
2. Turn the eyepiece focus dial in or out until the reticle image is as crisp as possible.
Mounting the Spitfire
Orient the Spitfire so the illumination dial faces shooter.
1. Loosen the two base clamp hex nuts and attach the Spitfire to the rail/base, making sure that recoil lugs are solidly seated in base grooves.
2. Checking that the mount fully engages the base, press the Spitfire down and forward, then tighten and torque the base clamp hex nuts.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 11, 2015Very solid optic. Great if you want a little bit of magnification for medium range targets but still want quick target acquisition without having to adjust. Very clear and well made.
It is not an ACOG! People trying to compare this to any $1,500 or higher optic are comparing apples to oranges. Obviously it is not even made to compete with any $1,500 plus optic. But if, like me, you are just not going to spend $1,500 or more for a medium range fixed power scope then this is your answer. It works very well in that roll and does a great job.
Prism is easier on the eyes than a red dot and of course with the 3x magnification, is more useful than a red dot at moderate distance.
The green and red option is great for different lighting conditions and it implements them well. As a result the brightness settings that others disparage, is not an issue. If the green at its highest setting is not good for you then switch to red, which appears brighter. If the red is too bright in a given situation then switch to the green. The options are there and finding the right one is possible for any given lighting condition.
Also works with no batteries if sufficient light is available due to the prismatic design.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 19, 2017I purchased and have been using this optic since June of 2015. I did not want to review it until I ran it through the paces for a while. Mainly because I do not like to judge books by their cover. It sure is a high quality piece physically, but if the function does not perform like the aesthetics, then what is it worth as a scope anyway? I have to say, it has been great in every aspect. Everything from battery life, to glass quality, to reliability. It passes every test. It took a handful of shots to sight in, and it has held zero with no problem. I use it for coyote hunting and target shooting, and it performs flawlessly at both. Having both the Green and Red illumination options, as well as an etched reticle, give you the best of all worlds. Not sure exactly how long the battery is supposed to last, but I am over 2 years without issue. Mind you, I probably only have 5-6 hours of illumination use since I usually just use the etched glass without color.
If I had to get really picky and find something to complain about, I would say it is the mounting method. It mounts and holds just fine, but I wish it looked cleaner. I am not a fan of the nuts sticking off the side. It would be nice if there was either more of an aftermarket for this scope so different mounting methods were available, or it just came standard with a QD mount of some sort. I believe American Defense makes a QD mount for it, but it does not look right if the riser is installed since the riser goes beyond the length of the QD mount.
Overall, I love this Vortex product just like I do the other Vortex product I own (Diamondback binos). You really can't beat the quality for the price! Oh, and that lifetime warranty...

- Reviewed in the United States on March 6, 2025Absolutely worth every penny. This is meant for a 5.56 rifle, but I mounted it on a Ruger SFAR in .308 and this thing is NICE! On a clear day you don't even need to turn on the optic. The etched reticle is crystal clear already. Zeroing it in was a walk in the park and allowed for me to get a 2 inch grouping at 100 yards taking into account for human error. If you're looking for a solid optic for close to medium range, get this. You won't regret it.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 20, 2024This scope is the perfect size for an AR, with ultra-fast acquisition, super clear optics, and the ability to easily turn the reticle either green or red with a simple turn of a knob. I love the flip up dust covers, because the seal well and never get lost of fall off, etc. Great Vortex warranty and customer service as well. I wish it was 5x magnification, but for the price its impossible to beat.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 9, 2016I'd like to give this optic four stars, but I have to downgrade it a bit because of its eye relief. Unlike red dots, which can be mounted farther forward, this optic is really a 3x scope, and must be mounted much farther to the rear. The eye relief is only 2 1/2 inches, and if you move it out much beyond that 2 1/2 inch distance you loose much of the field of view. I had to remove the rear sight in order to get the Spitfire close enough to my eye to be useable. This wouldn't be an ideal situation if I was taking this thing to a firefight, but since I don't plan on doing that it should be OK. To avoid injury, though, keep it at a safe distance so that recoil doesn't slam it back into your eye.
Now for the good part. This thing is built like a tank, only weighs about a pound, the optics are clear, and the standard mount fits perfectly. The ability to focus the rear element is helpful for guys like me whose eyesight isn't 20/15 any more. The covers for the elevation and windage adjustments are tethered by a steel wire, making it (almost) impossible to lose them unless you snip the wire. Adjustments are easy, with positive clicks, and the best news is that it's so solid that you would really have to abuse it to lose your "zero".
The reticle is also a great feature, with a BDC built specifically for the AR-15 chambered in .223/5.56. While I can't foresee needing to take a 400 yard shot with an AR-15 with a 16-inch barrel, the bullet drop is already marked for you in 100-yard increments. I'm not sure how well this would work with an AK or my 300 blk AR, but might give it a try some day. The choice of red or green is a nice option, and you can vary the intensity over a wide range running from barely visible to a near retina burning brilliant. Even with the battery switched off you can still see the etched reticle in daylight, a handy feature to have if you're out in the field when your battery dies and you didn't think to bring a spare.
Overall, this is a good quality, mid-priced prism scope, and I would recommend it for an AR-15 shooter. It's comparable to the similar Burris model, and a much better value than a lot of stuff out there on the market, but I think I'd have to give the nod to the Burris as the best performer in this class. Still a much better value than others selling for $200 more.

5.0 out of 5 stars
