An occasional shooter's cheap alternative to expensive glass!

An occasional shooter's cheap alternative to expensive glass!
My shooting style is very recreational - I like to kick back, set some targets up, get some tannerite, and have just a fun relaxed day of shooting. That said, my need for top notch 1200 dollar scopes is non-existent. I did however want to put a scope on one of my ARs to do some longer distance shooting. Recommendations on forums flooded in telling me to buy scopes that ranged from 600-1200+. For the amount of shooting I do, this was just not in the budget, and would be a waste of a good scope. I had recently purchased a ProStaff for my 10/22 and love it, so I decided to try a ProStaff on my AR. This scope does not disappoint. For the money, it does what I need it to do, and does it accurately. It's spot on and seems to continue to hold zero perfectly. The only gripe is at full zoom, you do get a bit of a blur in it. But the furthest I shoot is about 300 yards, so the blurring is not a big issue for me. This scope has been a great addition to my AR, and would recommend it to anyone who is just a recreational shooter who doesn't want to spend a ton of money on glass for their AR. Also, Nikon has a program on their website that allows you to figure out what distance the bullet drops are depending on the caliber you're shooting - this came in very handy for initially shooting, the bullet drops worked fairly well.

I have mounted several of these scopes on guns for friends. The feedback that I have received seemed to indicate that they liked the Nikon Prostaff and its performance, so I finally broke down and bought a few for myself.

.....WHY did I wait so long? If your mounts are solid and the scope is properly secured, it's performance is perfection. I have taken this product on several hunts and with each outing I had great results when the moment of truth presented itself to me. Hunt after hunt, point of aim did NOT drift and the scope held ZERO perfectly; even when changing power settings. Awesome performance in the field.

Never did I ever think that I would find such a high quality scope, with such clear optics for this price. I have replaced the glass on several of my bolt actioned rifles with the Nikon Prostaff 3x9 Variable powerscope. This is a Steal Deal.

Looking for a solid variable power with a bright clear field of view, and solid mechanics that result in dead on ZERO every time?...the Nikon Prostaff is what you are looking for.

Every now and then a product comes along that exceeds your expectations and comes at a price that is really a steal. I had a budget of $400 to spend on a scope and did my homework for almost a week on what to buy. It came down to the Leupold or Redfield for crystal clear optics and solid construction. I actually stumbled upon the Nikon Prostaff by mistake but the rave reviews made it irresistible. I received the scope today and everything about it screams $400. The optics are extremely clear and sharp up to 9x. The turrets are high quality and the overall construction is solid will an expensive feel. Throw in the free Spot On" Software and any Mall Operator can shoot with the precision of Chris Kyle out to 500+ yards. Make no mistake, this is a BIG, solid, sexy scope! Sitting on top of my custom AR build it really completes the look and feel. I mated the scope to my AR with the Nikon M223 mount which was expensive but a must have for this scope. I haven't taken this out to the range yet because I want to sight it in at 100 yards and need an outdoor range for that. But I have no doubt that this will perform like a champ. So...go ahead and get your AR Porn on and get this scope. You simply won't find a better scope for the money and arguably under $400.

      SUMMARY:
I bought this scope because of all the glowing reviews and the good value for the money.
But I sold it because it was not suitable for bullseye target shooting at 50 foot or 75 foot ranges, like the indoor ranges where I shoot most often.
That's because this scope is fixed focus, which makes it blurry at 50 feet or 75 feet.
I'm tempted to give it 3 stars, but my needs (target shooting) are probably different than people who use this for hunting, so I'm giving it four stars instead of three.
If you shoot at short ranges like me, you should instead buy the Nikon Prostaff Target EFR (Extended Focus Relief) 3-9 x 40 model 6734, which I purchased later and give 5 stars!

      NEGATIVES:
      1) The scope is fixed focus, can't be focused for shorter ranges, so at 50 foot or 75 foot (25 yard) ranges the target shows up blurry. It's especially blurry when zoomed in to higher magnifications (9x), as some others noted. Only the reticle can be focused, not the scope itself, so at 50-75 feet even if the reticle is in focus, the target is blurry.
      2) The eye relief is unforgiving. You have to have your eye in EXACTLY the right spot (3.6 inches exactly), or you can't see, and if your mount and rings don't allow enough adjustment, you're in trouble.
      3) For me, Nikon's BDC (bullet drop compensation) reticle was difficult to use. My eyes kept wanting to focus on the CIRCLES below the crosshairs, which were more visible than the tiny crosshairs. I prefer the Pentax reticle (horizontal lines) or Nikon's standard reticle (Nikoplex), which is all I need because I don't shoot at ranges over 100 yards anyway.
      4) Minor quibble: Nikon's reticle has no illumination. Some other scope makers (UTG, Leapers, etc.) offer inexpensive scopes with lighted reticles that would be better for shooting black bulls-eye targets (or hunting dark colored animals). So make sure your target has a colored bulls-eye, not a black bulls-eye, because black on black is hard to see.

      POSITIVES:
      1) For LONG distance shooting (and ONLY for long distance), this scope is bright and clear.
      2) For LONG distance shooting, the variable magnification is a plus (but for short range shooting, higher magnification makes the target even more blurry).

Because this scope did NOT meet my needs, I sold it and replaced it with two other scopes for two different rifles:
      1) A Burris AR-332, which is fixed 3 x 32 with an option to illuminate the reticle (red, green, or black with no illumination). That scope works fine at 50 foot indoor ranges.
      2) A different Nikon Prostaff scope, the Nikon Prostaff Target EFR (Extended Focus Relief) 3-9 x 40 model 6734. This new scope has the "matte precision reticle" (similar to Nikoplex) instead of the BDC reticle, and can be focused from 10 yards to infinity so it's MUCH better for 50-75 foot ranges. See my 5-star review of that scope!

I read allot of reviews before I picked a scope in this price range. I read some reviews on a competing NC Star product comparably priced. One review stood out, that spoke to the scopes clarity and that it does not vignette like other scopes in the price range. That review was spot on and I'm glad I picked up this product. I started doing local shooting competitions and needed something that would get me on target consistently at 100 yards. I focused the majority of my build budget on on the rifle itself, and put it on a custom Kit Fox Defense Billet Upper receiver ([...]) with a Wilson Combat 1-8 .223 Wylde Bull Barrel. The zoom is great, the cross hairs are clear, the bullet drop compensations is accurate and of course it does not vignette. I noticed significant improvement in my 100 yard shots using standard 55 grain rounds I was able to keep a group within a silver dollar, which I was no where close to before. I strongly recommend this scope as a fantastic scope for the price. There are products that will give you enhanced performance but at 10 times the price this scope closes that gap pretty nicely.
