About Red Dot Lens Positioning

All red dot sights have an objective lens at the front of the unit that is spherical in shape. However, unlike a conventional riflescope with all lenses mounted perpendicular (at a 90 degree angle) to the axis of the tube, the objective lens in a red dot sight is positioned off axis and appears to be tilted when looking at the sight (see below). This angle of the front lens allows the light generated by the battery powered LED light source inside the unit to be reflected back into the sight. The reflected light becomes the “dot” or aiming reference that the shooter sees when a red dot sight is switched on. This engineered “bending” of light is what makes today’s red-dot sights so popular and easy to use.

Warning - The primary Amazon photo is incorrect! Shows the discontinued model
When you first browse this TRS-25 on Amazon, the main display page shows a photo of the sight with the Bushnell Logo in a small font printed in Yellow/Gold. That is an old image. Do not buy this sight thinking or hoping you will receive once with the Yellow logo version like shown in the original Amazon photo. You will get the newer model with a White/Silver logo... even the one Sold and shipped by Amazon! The primary reason for mentioning this is … if you’ve spent any time reading various internet forums and reviews, or taken the time to peruse all the reviews here in Amazon, it's common to find warnings about TRS-25’s with a white versus the yellow Bushnell logo. Also, do not buy this sight if you are attempting (as some suggest) to play the “Yellow Logo lottery” hoping you will receive one with a yellow logo and not a white one. That lottery trick / suggestion is also quite old. It may have worked back in early 2015 when Bushnell first did the redesign but all the old stock has long since been exhausted. The logo color warnings are not relevant, i.e., ones that state the original yellow/gold Bushnell logo is found on models that are made in Japan and better quality when compared to the newer models with the Bushnell logo in white that are now coming out of China. Some of the negative review complaint examples:Red dot is about half as bright.Red dot is not centered in displayRed dot is distortedEnd lens is Green no long Red/orangeSo... are the current Chinese models inferior to the Japanese model? Not really. Bushnells production quality guideline standards are strictly enforced regardless of the country of origin. Have there been problems or complaints about receiving units with manufacturing defects? Yes! BUT... there are three good reasons:1) If you take the time to read ALL the negative reviews you will discover a lot of them are pre-2015 when the units were shipping from Japan. This simply means people were complaining about the same issues with the Japanese as with the current white logo models from China.2) Items like this are mass produced on a production line in the tens of thousands. Occasionally defects find their way into an item, even products from leading manufacturers made in the US. It doesn’t mean the product is junk. It can simply mean you were unlucky enough to get one with a manufacturing defect.3) Most factual - at any point in time there are typically 4 or more third party sellers on Amazon selling this very same item. Some of the sellers are selling fake products. You can get ripped off. Your best bet is to only buy products like this when the item says “Sold and Shipped by Amazon” If you buy something Sold and Shipped by Amazon, returns and refunds are easy and painless. If you buy a knockoff from a third party vendoryou have to work with them, not Amazon, and may have to pay return shipping and or restocking fees and if lucky get your money backFACT: The genuine current production models from Bushnell are manufactured in China and ship with the Logo printed in White/Silver paint. The logo has a “slightly” raised finish you can feel. Do yourself a favor and look at all the other photos in the Amazon listing, as well as all the images in the advertisement below the listing. You will see ALL the photos show the Bushnell Logo in white/silver. Its only the top photo in the Amazon listing that is incorrect since it shows the old original yellow/gold version.FAIR WARNING: This Red Dot Sight has been around for a long time and is very is popular. As a result there are plenty of fake knockoffs on both Amazon and eBay. Further confusing the matter, the crooks making the fake knockoffs are smart and are aware of the lottery rumors and the hopes people have on finding “new old stock” with the Yellow/Gold logo. As a result the crooks are making fakes units with the yellow gold logo. Today you can buy fake knockoffs with the yellow/gold logo just like the original Japanese model. Don’t fall for it. Today's genuine TRS-25 made under license by Bushnell have the larger Bushnell in white/silver. (see attached photo)TIP: Check out the YouTube video with the Title: REAL VS FAKE Bushnell TRS-25 Trophy Red Dot SightsIn addition to the Real vs Fake video , upon inspection of the lenses... one end should appear to be clear glass and the other lens should have a vivid red/orange tint. Lenses on “some” of the knockoffs have green finish or tint. Its a pretty iridescent green , but fake nonetheless. Also be aware some fakes have the red/orange lens so don't use that for an indicator alone. Shop carefully. Better yet ,only buy if it says Sold and Shipped by AmazonTwo suggestions to ease your anxiety and pain:1) Accept the fact you will be getting the white log Chinese version. Buy the TRS-25 when the price is down. How? If you bother to watch the TRS-25 over an extended period of time you will see the price fluctuates anywhere from $45 to $145 (hint: check the website camelcamelcamel) If you wait and watch the TRS-25 on a regular basis you can get lucky and buy it when the price is closer to the $50 range.2) Be vigilant. Avoid Amazon third party sellers you are unfamiliar with. Read the sellers storefront reviews. Again, your best bet if you decide to and purchase one of these… verify the one you selected and placed in your cart shows: “Sold and Shipped by Amazon”. Granted it may be a few dollars more that one being offered by a third party seller but you know it will be the genuine articleLast, some owners have complained the red dot appears distorted or a blurry. This will happen if you have an astigmatism. It’s a very common eye disorder that can be corrected by Lasik or eyeglasses. If you wear prescription glasses put them on, then you will see a perfect dot. Unfortunately, as a rule, contacts typically do not correct astigmatism and the image may still look distorted.Be aware Bushnells "One year limited warranty”. Not a deal breaker, but if you ever need to send it in under warranty you will need to also include $10 to cover their return shipping back to you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally tried one of these out
Reviewed in the United States on August 8, 2022
I don't write reviews much anymore. I figured I'd chime in with a contemporary 2022 opinion.

I always put off buying a TRS-25. I figured it's a pricier "cheap" red dot. I always opted for the red dots in the $25-50 price range (Field Sport, Feyachi, Midten), figuring they're just range red dots. I've owned half a dozen of these red dots in that price range, and even the ones that are "TRS-25 Clones". I always assumed the ones that look just like the TRS-25 are pretty much the exact same thing with different markings on them. 6 years after buying my first cheap red dot for range time, I've finally bought the TRS-25 that I saw then. I just always figured it wasn't worth double or triple the cost of those.

Upon closer inspection, they're actually a fair bit different, in small ways. I'm surprised in a good way, and the quality of the TRS-25 is a bit nicer. The dot is actually clear, but it appears like a little star burst in the exact same pattern as all my other red dots. It's a very minor astigmatism I have, and it's not an issue. I noticed the same pattern on Aimpoint PROs, etc.

It comes with the expected items in a nice cardboard box. Little wrench, a bikini cover, and a battery that is not dead inside the unit with a plastic liner keeping it from making contact.

The emitter inside the rear seems a little more thoughtfully constructed and built in. Glass has a very light blue tint to it, which I've seen on some.

The battery dial is easy enough to turn, but not loose. Again, having owned several of the cheaper red dots, some of them are looser, and some are so tight you can hardly turn the thing. This is a happy medium.

I was curious about the adjustment turrets, so I included some pics of that stuff, too. I never really see those without the caps on in reviews, so I added mine. The caps for the turrets do not have any notch or points machined into them to use them to adjust the actual turrets when they're off, but a shell case rim did just fine. They have a concave notch machined into them, so something like that shell case rim or a dime would work perfectly.

My TRS-25 has laser etched dial dot and Bushnell markings, referring to an older review that showed the real vs not real model. Mine seems consistent with a real one, except the laser etchings. Just about everyone is going to laser etchings as they're just cheaper to do.

Everything about it feels like it's better finished and machined, and over all a bit nicer than my previous models. I didn't think the difference would be noticeable at all, much less as much as it is. Even the mounting screw and plate catch are better machined, and this mounting plate catch is spring loaded. Most are not.

I'm running it on top of a spare UTG 0.83" riser I already had, the medium model. It allows for the lower 1/3 ish co-witness with standard height AR rifle sights. The UTG riser is not included.

I'm planning on purchasing another one for another rifle running a cheaper older model. The older model is nice, but costs about 2/3 of this price. It just started flickering on and off after a year. I had to open it up and tighten stuff up and hopefully it'll continue working.

I will actually update and follow up with this review, once I can get out and run the red dot, IF anything goes wrong. If two years from now this review is still posted with no UPDATE: section, then it has been running just fine. This is an initial impressions review, and so far, it's quite a bit nicer than I thought. Worth the extra money? As of right now, yes, and I'd never have agreed to that in the past.

Thanks for reading.

4.0 out of 5 stars A NICE RED DOT. GET IT!
Reviewed in the United States on November 2, 2016
I ordered this red dot earlier this year before I completed my M4 rifle that it was going on. When I first turned it on and played with the adjustable red dot brightness I really wasn't that impressed. I'm not sure what the issue was before, but it really works great now! I finally got time to try it on my rifle and it's fantastic! It looks fantastic on my rifle too. It was really easy to sight in. I have it dialed in right now where I am aiming at the center X of my target and placing a group within a one inch circle just slightly below and to the left of the X. With a little more time I will have this thing dialed in dead nuts center.

Yes but how does it hold up to recoil you say? It holds up fantastically! The I have it attached to a nice Seekins Precision 0.83mm riser, which is the exact height you want for this red dot if you plan on doing a co-witness set up with the MODBUS Magpul Poly front and rear pop up sights, and it has grabbed on and not let go of the riser. The lenses have stayed put inside the body of the red dot sight, and it just does a very good job.

I really like this red dot. For one, I bought this because it is Bushnell. They have a longstanding reputation of quality. Two, the price is unbeatable. Three, any review I read about this particular red dot sight has recommended it. I have given it four stars because the brighter you adjust your red dot the more it starts looking like a spider. I sighted it in on level eight I believe. The highest setting is eleven. Eight was bright enough to see it on any target except red maybe. Nine will probably be acceptable too.

I do also want to mention that what is pictured is not what you get unless you are lucky. What you get is the Gen 2 Bushnell TGS-25. You can tell by the different colored lettering on the Gen 2. The original red dot in the Amazon picture the Bushnell letters are yellow. the Gen 2 Bushnell letters are white. Plus the Gen 2 front lens is canted. This is actually a bonus. The Gen 1 red dot had an issue with glaring on the front lens and made it difficult from time to time to fully see the red dot. The Gen 2 canted lens makes the glaring go away. BONUS!

I totally recommend this red dot. I will more than likely purchase it again for future builds.

5.0 out of 5 stars easy to use and holds zero well
Reviewed in Canada on February 11, 2018
cheap, durable, bright, easy to use and holds zero well. Easy mounting system too which only requires an Allen wrench that is included so this will ensure a tight fit. works well as a backup sight too for me with my nikon 4x12 bushmaster scope. It's also a great "every gun" sight as long as a Picatinny rail is available. The dot moves too which will keep your point of aim true even though you're not aligned properly with your sights which can prove very useful. The only bad thing I consider is that you need a screwdriver or a coin to change the position of the dot but still is amazing. Worth every penny if your not planning on spending the amount it takes to buy a gun to get an optic device
